ДахаБраха (DakhaBrakha) – Light: This band excels at blending the traditional and the modern, a feat so often fumbled. There’s even a bit of a toe-dipping into hip hop with their track “Carpathian Rap”, the backbone of the accompaniment, of course, still being traditional instruments. This album has a little bit of everything, from full, lush folk pop tracks with strong, enveloping percussion to sparse, experimental spoken-word playfulness. And the way those ladies sing, with those trills and their tight, polyphonic singing… music to come back to again and again. These people know how to make a fun album because they know how to have fun while making it.
