USA, 1992, experimental rock / singer-songwriter / dark cabaret

Tom WaitsAlice (The Original Demos): As if Waits’ dirty demos weren’t attractive enough, this is all worth it just to hear him bark out half-drunk on poetry the lines of “Jabberwocky”. This is Alice unpolished, tarnished, beautifully simple with sometimes Waits being accompanied only by a double bass or a mellotron. “Reeperbahn” here is a disgusting, frightening ode to Hamburg’s nightlife. It’s incredible how different these demos sound from the polished studio release. The last half of this bootleg is some creepy, fun instrumental interludes, just exploring the overall dark cabaret theme of the album.
