Benin, 1977, soukous / Fon music

T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou – BéninZoundegnon Bernard ‘Papillon’ guitariste principal: In the grand tradition of music in and around Nigeria, this album is one continuous, unbroken party on side A. Oh you thought the party was over? Nah. Turn over the record, because the party continues on side B. The only reason there’s a break at all is because of the limitations of physical media—certainly not because of any limitations of this limitless music. This is a great example of intra-African appropriation. Squeezing every last drop of juicy goodness out of its repetitive, never-ending grooves.
