Sun Ra – The Lady With the Golden Stockings: I was thinking partway through, what am I specifically listening to here? Because it sounds like the music is obsessed with… feet. Or rather, with gaits. First, the music stalks, then it dances seductively toward you, almost like a belly-dance, and then it moves to gin-joint jigs and after-hours shuffling. This album is more accessible than I ever realized Sun Ra could be. The guy is downright normal on Side A! Back to the after-hours shuffling… oh yeah, you shuffled out the door of the jazz club right into the dark night of Africa. If you’re not expecting a bit of teleportation by now, you’ve not yet heard enough Sun Ra. Just listen to those timpani beckoning you deeper.
