Sturgill Simpson – The Ballad of Dood & Juanita: A cute little album. I’ve read comparisons to Red Headed Stranger. It’s not really like that at all, though. The story isn’t similar, and neither is the structure of the story, unless you’re just looking at the universality of all stories having conflict, rising action, and resolution. This ain’t the best Sturgill’s done, but hell if it ain’t a fine, cozy album. And if you’ve ever loved a dog, you’ll understand “Sam”. The mountains are in this music.
“Cozy” is a good word. This album is a yarn told by the kitchen fire, reminiscing about the family tree and the family legends.
