Meredith Monk, Hildegard von BingenMonk and the Abbess (Musica Sacra/Richard Westenburg)

Leave it to Monk, the connoisseur of all that is vocal, to tackle the choral and poetic works of the genius St. Hildegard, a woman of many talents who not only oversaw the production of illuminated manuscripts at her abbey but was also a botanical and medicinal scholar. This is, of course, in addition to her creative works of poetry and choral music. Monk’s monophony that breaks out into polyphony is equally beautiful but possessing her quirks (heee heee heee) sprinkled throughout. This is sacred music for both inside and outside the church.
