France / Italy, 1995, free jazz

Romano, Sclavis, Texier, & Le QuerrecCarnet de routes

The hypnotic and varied percussion serves as a rough roadmap for the sometimes wild sometimes lazy clarinets and saxophones meandering–wandering–with a purpose, on a walkabout through new, unknown lands, terra given substance beneath the gait of Texier’s contrabasse. I love that this “free jazz” record is not just jazz but also folk couched in West African oral tradition storytelling. The feeling of transportation—of moving…somewhere—is strong.
