UK, 1996, film score

Patrick Doyle – Hamlet: Doyle’s soundtrack gives pathos to what I consider to be a rather cerebral play, a view no doubt influenced by the over-analytical nature of the main character. This music, like pretty much all of Doyle’s releases, is tied up in the experience of the film. As a Shakespeare nut, I adore the collaboration of Doyle and Branagh. There’s so much emotion here, highlighting such poignant scenes as Hamlet’s letter to Ophelia or the moment Hamlet realizes Ophelia has tricked him.
Hamlet as a character strikes me as a cerebral man–whose passions sometimes overwhelm him, to his own perplexity.
